Meditations of an Artist II
Recovering a Sense of Identity
This week is centered around the idea that one must nurture themselves, in order to nurture their creative self. Themes of self-identity and self-expression are prevalent in the text, as we are urged to hold firm to the teachings of nurturing the self. Do not allow the doubt, or anxieties, of those around you to worm their way into your consciousness and perception of your creative self.

A bit later in the chapter, we are further urged to replace skepticisms with open-mindedness and curiosity. Throughout this week, we are to consciously practice open-mindedness and to use this as a means of allowing for exploration of the unfamiliar rather than securing ourselves within what is "safe" or what is known.

Cameron reminds us in this chapter of the importance of paying attention and what that actually entails. In this section, we are presented with a quote from poet William Meredith wherein he observes that the worst that can be said of a man is that "he did not pay attention." For it is in the lack of paying attention that we miss what makes living, creating, and loving all the sweeter.

"The quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight. The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention."
In observation, how exactly does the act of paying attention relate to recovering or honoring one's sense of identity?
Within one's self, paying attention to exactly what brings joy or a sense of fulfillment can lead to a more robust understanding of self identity. In honoring the impulses of creative-self, rather than putting focus into the creation of work that is for validation of others, you are strengthening that sense of self identity.

I believe this chapter also serves as a sort of warning to creatives, to surround oneself with peers that are supportive and understanding of the creative mind. Cameron goes into great detail of instances wherein a creative individual essentially absorbs the doubts and anxieties presented by friends and family who aren't in favor of strengthening one's sense of self identity. This negativity then works its way into the creative's perception of themselves.

In concluding week two of The Artist's Way, I think one of the most important things to take away thus far is to be confident in your creative abilities and to create boundaries which are conducive to the creative-self's needs, desires, and interests.
There is a common phrase amongst artists which claims we are our own worst enemies, but I think in this week we are encouraged to see ourselves as our biggest source of validation and strength.
